OK, this is just a quick and dirty faq originally done by Ed...
Then, stolen by Uncle Dad...without permission even!
Before you complain about biggulp, first check to see if you have a
life. If not...then return when you do.
As to how hard it is to access, remember why you are using biggulp.
If your isp had a good server you would not have to look here at all.
Having a quality usenet server available for free is a plus. Use it
with care. And don't bitch because it is full!
Q:
How do I repay someone for their work in running biggulp?
A:
There are two answers...
- Point your browser to: Octanews and sign up for some commercial news service!

What do I need to access biggulp?
A:
Just define biggulp.readfreenews.net to your news reader as a
server. You do not need a userid and password to read headers and
articles.
Q:
What port should I use to access biggulp?
A:
Any port you choose, biggulp will answer on all ports.

Why do I receive '400 too many connection' errors from biggulp?

Why do I keep getting "You have reached the connection limit for your
access classification" from biggulp?
A:
The server is full. Try again later. Biggulp only allows a limited
number of users to connect at any time. Once the server reaches that
point, it needs to reject any additional connections. When someone
leaves, someone else will get on. Wait your turn, don't crowd to the
front and don't try to butt in line!

Why do I receive '502 ... unauthorized' errors from biggulp?

Why do I keep getting error from biggulp?
A:
Well, perhaps you should talk to your ISP about making sure forward and
reverse DNS match each other. Having a lack of reverse mapping doesn't
really matter in the grand scheme of things, but if your ISP is lazy,
you lose. Perhaps you should find a new ISP, one that doesn't suck?
Q:
How many connections am I allowed?
A:
Two. Period. Well, 2 useful ones. It used to be 4 connections but I
decided to start a business with the other hardware...

What speeds can I hope for?
A:
Headers are set as fast as the servers can send them with the limitation
of what the available bandwidth is on the router and the ethernet network
that RFN is connected to. ***there is some limiting going on right now***

Articles are sent at speeds up to 20KB on the first connection and up
to 10KK on the second. Notice the use of 'up to' in there. That means
you may get up to that. It does not mean you will get that type
of speed.
Q:
What happens if I try to get too many connections?
A:
You will be scorned for this kind of abuse, teased until you cry, and
receive a wedgy for even thinking about it! On top of that, young
teenage girls will laugh at your inability to follow the rules and
will make fun of your hairy palms!
Ah, and yah, you will be banned for six hours on top of the above abuse.
Q:
What IP should I use?
A:
What a stupid question.
Use the DNS name as listed above. There is no reason to enter an IP
address into your news reading software. Again, use the DNS name as
listed above. You have been warned. Do not whine and cry if all of
a sudden you can't access because you decided to hard code an IP.
Q:
How long of a wait can I expect before I get on?
A:
As long as it takes.
It depends on how busy the server is and how often you retry. You could
get on the next time you try or you could be waiting for hours.
Q:
What time is the server least loaded?
A:
Never, it is full 24x7x365. Just keep trying, the pr0n is waiting...
Q:
How long should I wait between retries?
A:
There is no specific answer here. If you wait 5 or 10 or 30 seconds,
that should be OK.
Q:
What if my news reader does not support retries?
A:
Well, Ed would suggest switching to a multi server binary news
reader. If you are using biggulp it should be as a fill server. Using
a multi server binary news reader makes using biggulp as a fill server
a lot easier. In fact it's almost automatic. And if you like binaries,
you should have already found many reasons to get a specialized news
reader.
Q:
How do I post with biggulp?
A:
Only if you have an account. Right now you can only dream about
getting an account. They are not being issued. Stop asking!
So use your isp server to post or get an account at the news.readfreenews.net
server or bubbanews or teranews or post.newsfeeds.com server.

No posting of binaries, though.

How do I request groups?
A:
You email news @ readfreenews . com to request them. Then you wait.
